Perhaps the most famous monument in Italy after St. Peter's
and the Colosseum in Rome and no wonder... An artistic and
architectural masterpiece the Duomo in Florence deserves every
accolade it gets! So many nice things have been written about
this wonderful buidling that is it difficult to know where
to start... suffice to say that despite being built in the
late 13th century the Duomo remains to this
present day the tallest building in Florence with absolutely
no building allowed to be higher than it.
There are 463 steps to the
summit of the Duomo Florence and the panoramic view of Firenze
is unparalled, on a clear day the churches of Santo Spirito,
Santa Croce, the majestic hillside town of Fiesole and even
piazzale Michelangelo very near the Hotel Villa Carlotta are
all visible. It is a great starting point for your tour of
Florence and from the top of the Duomo you can quickly ascertain
where the major monuments and places of interest are thus
making it easier to plan your sightseeing.
Thanks to the Duomo and its domination of
the Florence skyline it is very difficult to get lost in Florence,
every where you go you can see its distinctive orange
coloured Dome which contrasts beatifully with the
Sky Blue background.
