Uffizi Gallery
Florence

The Uffizi Gallery is so big it covers an area of about 8.
square kilometres and contains one of the most important collections
of paintings from the last 6 centuries.
Entry to the Uffizi Gallery is available
every 15 minutes! Reservations must be made with a minimum
of 1 day notice. Reservations are limited to 30 persons maximum.
Highlights not to be missed include Paolo
Uccello's Battle of San Romano which was the first ever painting
to use perspective fore shortening i.e. make things look further
away by making them smaller than objects in the foreground..
look out for this painting and study the lances which "taper"
at the end... Then think back to when you were at elementary
school and used to draw a road with the markings down the
middle, the road became narrower in the distance and the markings
shorter. Seems easy now but at the time it was a major breakthrough.
Another great room is the room dedicated to Domenico Ghirlandaio
whose paintings are always recogniseable because they contain
a self portrait of himself sometimes dressed as a boy, sometimes
a woman but the face is always the same... cheeky chappy!
